What Causes Cracked Heels?

Common Causes of Cracked Heels

  • Dry skin: Low moisture levels can make heel skin thick, rough, and more likely to crack.
  • Standing for long periods: Prolonged standing increases pressure on the heels, especially on hard surfaces.
  • Open- back shoes: Sandals and slippers can allow the heel's skin to expand and split under pressure.
  • Hot showers and harsh soaps: These can strip the skin of its natural oils.
  • Medical conditions: Eczema, psoriasis, diabetes, and certain circulation problems can contribute to dry or cracked heels.

How Can You Prevent Cracked Heels?

Moisturize your heels daily with a thick foot cream, especially after bathing. Wear supportive, properly fitting shoes, avoid walking barefoot on hard surfaces, and gently remove excess thick skin without cutting or scraping it aggressively.

If heel cracks are deep, painful, bleeding, or show signs of infection, seek professional care.

People with diabetes or poor circulation should have cracked heels evaluated early rather than treating them aggressively at home.

Healthy heels start with proper foot care. A podiatrist can help identify the cause or persistent cracking and recommend the right treatment.
